Punta del Diablo combines about 5 minutes 39 seconds of annularity with an established Rocha coast destination: beaches, cabins, hotels, campsites and Route 9 access. It offers a very different trip from Punta del Este.

Our verdict
Highly appealing for coast, informal travel and road trips; less frictionless than Punta del Este for an international no-car holiday.

Where to stay
The destination has hotels, cabin complexes and campsites. For eclipse night, parking and Route 9 access can matter more than being metres from the beach.
Mobility
A car adds significant value by connecting Santa Teresa, La Coronilla and other parts of Rocha while keeping viewing alternatives open.
Plan B if cloud develops
Prepare alternatives within Rocha and set a hard deadline for cloud chasing. We do not yet include a directly comparable local climate series in the score.
How to choose a viewing site
Beaches are obvious candidates, but check wind, sand, crowding and access. A site away from the centre may be better for photography gear and post-eclipse exit.
Important: this eclipse never reaches totality
You must use proper solar viewing protection throughout the partial phases and during the ring of fire itself. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe.
